G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis

The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with a compelling look into one of South Carolina’s most fascinating historical figures: Melvin Purvis, the Timmonsville native once known nationwide as “America’s G‑Man.” Presented as part of the acclaimed Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, G‑Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis explores the meteoric rise, cultural impact, and mysterious death of the FBI agent who helped bring down infamous gangsters including John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Pretty Boy Floyd.

In the 1930s, Purvis was a household name — so popular that more than 260,000 children collected Junior G‑Man badges and decoder rings from Post Toasties cereal boxes. Yet despite his fame, Purvis’ life ended under circumstances that remain debated to this day. Was it suicide? An accident? Or something more sinister? This documentary dives into the legend, the man, and the unanswered questions that still surround his story.

The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 10th at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
